A new report from the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights shows that of the 21 states that allowed corporal punishment in public schools between 2013 and 2014, a dozen are in the South. The heaviest hitter was Mississippi, where more than 5% of all students were hit at least once. Other states ranking high on the list include Arkansas, Alabama and Texas.
